2009 European Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ChampionshipsFirst Major BJJ Tournament of 2009 Held in Lisbon, Portugal
Many of the world's best grapplers were out at the 2009 IBJJF European Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Championships, held in Lisbon, Portugal between January 30th and February 1st.
On January 30th, 2009, just one day after the passing of Brazilian jiu-jitsu Grandmaster Helio Gracie, a collection of elite BJJ players from around the world converged on Lisbon, Portugal to compete in the first major event of the year - the 2009 IBJJF European Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Championships. Six Years of Constant GrowthThe International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) European Championships started in 2004 and have been growing ever since. This year the list of countries represented included Brazil, Japan, Canada, the United States, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, Hungary, France, Estonia, Austria, Spain, and Finland. Check Mat BJJ: An Emerging BJJ SuperpowerFirst appearing in 2008, the Check Mat BJJ team was founded by Leozinho and Ricardo Vieira, both formerly of Brasa BJJ. Check Mat BJJ has since become a major force on the mats at any competition they enter and the 2009 European Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Championships were no exception. Alliance Continues its BJJ Competition DominanceFounded by Rolls Gracie black belt, Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti, Alliance BJJ is one of the most dominant Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition teams in the world. Alliance continued their winning tradition with a strong showing at the IBJJF's 2009 European Championships. Kron Gracie Wins MiddleweightWhen Kron Gracie, Rickson’s son, made his first international competition appearance as a black belt at the 2008 BJJ World Championships, he was eliminated in the first round. No such thing happened at the 2009 BJJ Euros though. Kron won the Black Belt Adult Middleweight (181 lbs) division in the name of Gracie Humaita. Grandfather Helio would have been proud. Remco Pardoel: Still Kicking Ass for Gracie Barra NetherlandsMixed martial arts fans familiar with the early Ultimate Fighting Championship tournaments will remember Remco Pardoel. His elbow-strike knockout on the ground over Thai boxer Orlando Weit in UFC 2 was an early display of jiu-jitsu’s devastating effectiveness against pure strikers. Remco hasn’t been fighting MMA lately, but he’s been nicely representing Gracie Barra Netherlands at the BJJ Euros. At the 2008 IBJJF Euros, Remco took first in the Ultra Heavyweight (221+ lbs) and Open Classes of the Black Belt Senior 1 division (36-40 years). This year, he took second place in Ultra Heavyweight.
