There are thousands of techniques within the art of Jiu Jitsu. Here are a a few to learn.

Although Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that takes a long time to learn, it can help to have an understanding of technique names and their translations, as well as a basic idea of how the technique is done. This list should not be used as a replacement for proper training, but might help to complement instruction. If one doesn't understand how to do a technique, ask your Sensei! Remember also that this is a small list and does not represent the entirety of Jiu Jitsu.

Nage Waza - Throwing Techniques

Osoto-Gari (Major Outer Reap)

  • Block to the inside of a punch.
  • Grab hold of the attacker.
  • Redirect their Kuzushi (balance) to the back corner.
  • Kick out their leg.

Ippon-Seoi-Nage (One Point Shoulder Throw)

  • Move in close to the attacker.
  • Get beneath their attacking arm.
  • Turn your back to them while holding their arm.
  • Sink and turn to toss them over.

O-Goshi (Major Hip)

  • Step toward the attacker, deflecting their attack.
  • Turn your hip towards their belly.
  • Lay your arm across their back and push it towards you.
  • Bend your knees and turn slightly.

Kansetsu Waza - Locking Techniques

Ude-Garami (Arm Entanglement)

  • The person's arm should be bent at the elbow.
  • Their hand can be pointing up or down.
  • Push the wrist down while the elbow is pushed up.

Ude-Kujiki (Arm Break)

  • Wrap your arm around their elbow.
  • Brace your hand against your own arm.
  • Apply pressure underneath the elbow while pushing down upon it.

Kote-Gaeshi (Wrist Twist)

  • Turn the person's wrist toward them, so their fingers point towards their face.
  • Turn the wrist away from their center line.
  • Push down upon the wrist, towards the ground.

Ne-Waza - Ground Techniques

Kesa-Gatame (Scarf Hold)

  • Sit at the persons side, facing away from them.
  • Wrap your arm around their neck.
  • Tuck your head into the space between their neck and shoulder.
  • Separate your legs for stability.

Yoko-Shiho-Gatame (Side-Four-Corner Hold)

  • Lie on top of the person, facing sideways.
  • Wrap one arm around their neck and the other through their leg.
  • Pull your knees up to control them at the ribs and hip.

Juji-Gatame (Cross Lock)

  • Move your hips close to their shoulders.
  • Allow their leg to drape in between your legs.
  • Turn their arm so their elbow touches your inner-thigh.
  • Lever the arm to cause pain.

While this is a very short list of the techniques within Jiu Jitsu, it can serve as a starting point for some research and learning. Remember that any of these techniques is designed to be used in conjunction with many others, so that you always have something that you can use when in any situation.
